May 18, 2022

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company – Masdar, the UAE’s leading clean energy developer, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Financial Settlement Centre for Renewable Energy Sources Support LLP for its 1GW wind farm in the Jambyl region of Kazakhstan.

The agreement was finalized during COP29 in Baku, in the presence of Sungat Yessimkhanov, Vice Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan, and Sharif Al Olama, Under-Secretary for Energy & Petroleum Affairs, Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure of the UAE. The signing was led by Abdulla Zayed, Director of Business and Project Development at Masdar, and Gulzhan Nalibayeva, General Director of the Financial Settlement Centre for Renewable Energy Sources Support LLP.

This milestone follows Masdar’s recent Investment Agreement with Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy. The project is set to become one of the largest wind farms in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region and marks Masdar’s first venture in Kazakhstan, Central Asia’s largest economy.

Located in southern Kazakhstan, the project includes a cutting-edge 600-megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), enhancing the region’s renewable energy infrastructure.

Masdar is leading the development of the wind farm in collaboration with W Solar, Qazaq Green Power (a subsidiary of the Samruk-Kazyna Group), and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund. Construction is expected to begin by Q1 2026.

Once operational, the wind farm will supply clean energy to approximately 300,000 homes, reducing annual CO2 emissions by 2 million tonnes, and significantly contributing to Kazakhstan’s renewable energy targets.
